Na setkach stron znajdujemy opisy przyrody i jej funkcjonowania, towarzyszymy mu w poszukiwaniu sposobów zbliżenia siÄ™ do otaczajÄ…cej natury i innych istot. Wnioski Thoreau w pewnym sensie pozostajÄ… w sprzecznoÅ›ci z przekonaniami dużej części opinii publicznej w zachodnim Å›wiecie do dziÅ›. Książka w jÄ™zyku angielskim. From the peaceful shores of Walden Pond and the contemplation of autumnal tints to the primeval forests and mountains of Maine, Henry David Thoreau takes us on a journey through New England in his books, essays, and journals. He devoted hundreds of pages to descriptions of the natural world and its workings, searching for a way to approach nature and establish a closer relation with other beings around him. Metaphors not only helped him to express what he observed and experienced but also shaped his perception and understanding of nature in the first place, as metaphor is not merely a linguistic ornament but a way of conceptualizing the world, which influences our attitude to the environment and other beings. Laura Suchostawska is an Assistant Professor at the University of WrocÅ‚aw, where she teaches courses on ecolinguistics, metaphor, and writing at the Institute of English Studies. She holds a PhD in linguistics as well as a master’s degree in English studies and in Spanish studies. Her research interests include the writings of Henry David Thoreau, metaphor, ecolinguistics, ecocriticism, as well as the culture of Peru and the writings of José MarÃa Arguedas. She is the author of the book Space and Metaphor and of numerous articles, and she co-edited the book Eating America: Crisis, Sustenance, Sustainability.
